Hello!
Welcome to the 2015-16 year in Art at BSIS. Art is part of the MAD rotation, where students spend 12 weeks with me, 12 weeks in Drama and the remaining 12 weeks, in Music. In Art, I try to expose students to as much different media as time will allow. Some units will take just a few days and some will take several weeks. This year, we will begin the year working with water color. This is a great exercise to learn drawing basics and the use of water soluble markers. Students learn to draw using shapes rather than with just drawing from one point to another. Students will create a still life in The Georgia O'Keefe style of painting. Next, we will do printmaking, sculpture, and jewelry projects.
Each unit support elements from core subjects and what they are learning in the regular classroom. World history is incorporated through the study of different artists who lived and worked in different time periods. Math is used in determining proportion and measurement. At the end of every project, students are required to do a verbal self-critique of each project. This allows them to reflect upon the work they have just completed as well as verbalize the strengths and weaknesses of each piece.
Our hands and minds are always busy in art. My purpose is to expand students' appreciation for art while reinforcing and supporting their core curriculum.
